FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. I want to try archery, what do I do?

Great, you're on the right track! You can check out the Discover the Sport section to see what kind of session would be right for you. You can also check out the Event Calendar to see when the next session or beginner course organized by the club is.

We aim to organize a guided session once a month that is open to everyone, and anyone can register. We also organize guided session s for companies, groups of friends, students and schoolchildren.

2. I want to buy a compound bow / recurve olympic bow / horse bow / longbow / barebow, can you advise?

Great, welcome to archery! We advise club members on purchasing their own bow - we recommend that you first go to a guided archery session or a beginner course, so you can assess whether the sport is right for you. You can also try all the different club bow types: compound bow, recurve olympic bow, horse bow, longbow and barebow.

We suggest that you first try the club bows for 2-3 months before purchasing your own bow. This way you will get a feel for the sport, see how your own physique can handle using the bow and learn the technique better with a lighter bow. When your technique is in order, you will also be able to purchase a suitable bow, and you will not hurt yourself at first with a bow that is too stiff.

If you absolutely need to purchase a bow right away, we recommend that you turn to archery shops, there are some in Finland too. Welcome to become a club member if you want to shoot with a bow in Kuopio!

3. Can I go shoot at the club's target foams with my own bow even if I'm not a club member? Just once?

Not without our permission. You can arrange a session with us, where you can test your own bow, even if you are not a member of the club.

We charge a target fee of 5 euros from outside the club. Whether you want to aim your compound bow for hunting (the club's targets are shot without cutter tips), or you are visiting Kuopio and are interested in archery, please contact us at kokeilut@puijonjousi.fi.

Welcome to try!

4. Can I try crossbow shooting?

There are no crossbow enthusiasts in our club, our target foams are not suitable for crossbow shooting.

5. Why do you have an age limit of 11 years for trying out the sport or taking a beginner course?

The club's bows are stiff enough that they are suitable for an 11-year-old. Some people start the sport at the age of 7-10, but it should be noted that practicing it requires sufficient concentration and some strength in the arm and back muscles.

6. I have tried archery before and would like to start/continue the hobby, what do I do?

Great, welcome! Contact us at kokeilut@puijonjousi.fi, Then we can agree together on how you can get started with the sport.

7. Do you have any junior activities?

Our club does not have activities specifically for juniors, but on Tuesdays from 6-8 pm we have mentoring, i.e. guidance upon request. A mentoring shift is a good way to familiarize yourself with the technique of the sport and, for example, try out different bows. An instructor is on hand to advise you on the sport. A mentoring shift is suitable for juniors and adults.

However, the launch of junior activities is planned for the autumn. If you would like to help start a junior course because your child would like to take up archery, please contact us at info@puijonjousi.fi.

8. Does everyone compete in archery?

Archery includes competitions as a visible part, but not everyone competes. Many people practice archery just for their own pleasure, as archery takes their thoughts away from work and everyday matters. Some practice the sport for hunting. And some like to shoot for themselves and leave the competitions to others.

Archery is therefore suitable for a wide variety of people as a hobby.

Puijon Jousi members currently compete in the olympic bow and longbow series, and the club strives to support the competition participants as best they can, at least by organizing carpools and organizing divari competitions. The club also pays for the competition shirt required by the rules for those participating in their first competitions.
